PASTOR’S MESSAGE I am looking forward to this month’s Washington ordination to priesthood in two weeks. I wonder if anyone would like to go down from our parish to see it? We could go together. I also would encourage persons to save Sunday June 20th on your calendar to go to the new Fr. David Wells’ first Mass at St. Pius X at 2 p.m. I am happy for my growing-up parish and for its parochial school to have one more of its own ordained to the priestly ministry. A first Mass in Bowie again is quite a treat! Go see it. (It is St. Pius’ eighth first Mass!)
We are replacing some old chalices/patens in our parish stock. We need to purchase a main set for the parish (for Sundays/Holy Days) which would be our special one. We do not currently have such a good chalice/paten set. The good ones start at $800 and go up into a few thousand dollars in cost. We have one picked out that is about $1000 in cost. The Liturgy Committee and the Parish Council have agreed upon it. The funding this parish vessel, I will appeal to you in a pastoral letter this summer for a small donation. It will first be used for St. Edward’s feast this October.
By the way, my own chalice is now getting repaired. I use it for weekday Masses here and for special occasions. Yet it has become chipped on its chalice lip, and the paten/plate has been dropped and has been bent a bit. It also needs refinishing/replating after its 9000+ uses at Masses. It is one of my most precious possessions, even though it is worth just about $400. It has held the miracle of the Body and Blood of Christ for so many occasions, thus it really is now in the “priceless” category.
Psalm 116: 12-13 says: “How can I make a return to the Lord for all the good He has done for me? The cup of salvation I will take up and I will call upon the Lord.” I think of our Savior at the Last Supper giving a whole new meaning to the verses. He inaugurated a cup of salvation in His own covenant of blood---meant to be shared at His Church’s altars through time until His Glorious Return. He has chosen for each priest’s chalice and church’s chalice to be a cup that holds our salvation, and one that is lifted up in thanksgiving to what God has now offered to us in Christ. I often think of that above Bible verse when celebrating Mass. The other Bible verse that is so significant to me in every Mass is the one we use for the consecration: “Do this in memory of Me.” (Luke 22:19) Fr. Barry
Wow, it’s June already. Summer is coming. I hope that you will keep coming to Mass and not have a “June Swoon.”
Last week’s Offertory collection amounted to $7782.48. The 200 identifiable contributors (25% of the parish) gave $6928.48 (89% of the total collection). The unidentifiable loose collection was $854.00. Additionally $284.00 was collected for the new building fund, $80.00 for Archdiocesan collections and $65.00 for holydays.
Eucharistic Adoration and Procession this weekend: Sunday: 12:45 p.m. After the 11:30 Mass, the Eucharist will be exposed on the altar at 12:45 p.m. for some prayers and songs, and (weather permitting) then processed outside for a procession to some stations for prayer, in celebration of our parish grounds as “holy ground” where the Lord resides in His Blessed Sacrament in His area church. The hour of prayer will be for the intention of vocations.

Votive Candles stand in church. Under the Mary and the Angels Icon. The votive lights last about 6 days. They are lit by wooden sticks, by borrowing a flame from a lit candle. There is a donation to be made in the box, there, to the right. There now is a prayer card up on the wall for your assistance, too. This is a prayer tradition in the Church to have ‘a light burning’ for an intention.
In Church news, the new version of the Roman Missal for Mass in English received its final approval. In a few months, there will have some changes in some wording and phrasing of our common prayers at Mass, in accord with a better translation from the Latin Missal. You can peak at these changes at www.nccbuscc.org/romanmissal/ , if you want. We will help you along to the change long before the ‘switch.’
KITCHEN RENEWAL AT FATHER’S RESIDENCE The parish thanks Rick Puleo (and son Ricky) and Romeo Paternoster and the assistance of Tim Curtis in a kitchen renewal project nearing completion. Maintenance man Phuong Tran and parishioners George Vincent and Paul Mendez also assisted in the plans – which included a new floor, cabinets, countertop, new paint, a newer oven and refrigerator. Thanks. It’s a nice Year of the Priest project, as the residence had the original kitchen beforehand.

A Short Definition of the Catholic Priesthood
“Holy Orders” is the life of the sacred minister. Those who serve the spiritual needs of others, in the Catholic Church are ordained by a bishop and by means of a special sacrament called Holy Orders. There is a hierarchy of these Catholic ministers: deacon, priest, and bishop. This sacrament can be received only once, just like Baptism and Confirmation, but a man may also be ordained to a higher order up to the third degree. A man must first be ordained a deacon before being ordained a priest, and he must be ordained a deacon and then a priest before being ordained a bishop. So every priest and every bishop has experienced the Sacrament of Holy Orders more than once, yet he can never be re-ordained a deacon, priest or bishop, because it’s for life. Only baptized men can receive the Sacrament of Holy Orders. Jesus Christ instituted the Sacrament of Holy Orders at the Last Supper simultaneously with His institution of the Sacrament of Holy Eucharist. In order to be able to change bread and wine into the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Christ, you need priests who’ve been given this power by virtue of their ordination. Bishops receive the highest level of Holy Orders, and it’s often said in the Church that bishops have the “fullness of the priesthood,” because they alone have the authority to offer all seven sacraments – Baptism, Penance, Holy Eucharist, Matrimony, Anointing of the Sick, Holy Orders, and Confirmation. Priests only have the power and authority (also known as faculties which is given by a bishop or religious superior) to normally celebrate five and sometimes a sixth. Normally they may celebrate Baptism, Penance, Holy Eucharist (Mass), Matrimony, and Anointing of the Sick. They also may be delegated to celebrate a Confirmation, such as on the Easter Vigil – yet normally the Confirmations are done by bishops. Deacons can only celebrate two, Baptism and Matrimony, provided that it’s a wedding without a Nuptial Mass. In extreme necessities, some sacraments can be performed by a layperson, such as Baptism if an individual’s life is in danger or Matrimony in mission countries if clergy aren’t available on a regular basis. Normally, though, deacons, priest, and bishops celebrate the sacraments, because one of their primary functions is to administer the sacred rites of the Church to God’s people. Catholic priests in the Roman Rite usually are celibate, single men. Yet in some Eastern Rites, they may be married. Permanent Deacons in the Roman Rite may be married. Yet if they are ordained as a single person, they must remain so. If a married deacon’s spouse passes on, he does not remarry.
